Mental Health and Psychatric Nurse
Lijet Respite Home is seeking a compassionate and skilled Mental Health and Psychiatric Nurse to join our care team. The ideal candidate will have experience working with individuals facing mental health challenges and psychiatric conditions, providing compassionate, trauma-informed care within a supportive, therapeutic environment. This role is crucial in promoting mental well-being, managing psychiatric symptoms, and supporting loved ones through comprehensive nursing care.

Reports to: Respite Care Coordinator
Key Responsibilities
- Assessment and Evaluation: Conduct mental health assessments, evaluate symptoms, and monitor the progress of loved ones with psychiatric conditions to ensure appropriate care and interventions.
- Medication Management: Administer prescribed medications, educate individuals and their families on medication use, and monitor for side effects or adverse reactions.
- Care Planning: Develop and implement individualized care plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, ensuring alignment with each person’s needs and treatment goals.
- Crisis Intervention: Provide immediate support in crisis situations, utilizing de-escalation techniques and therapeutic communication to stabilize individuals in distress.
- Therapeutic Support: Engage individuals in therapeutic activities and provide emotional support to foster a sense of safety, trust, and well-being.
- Patient Education: Educate individuals and their families about mental health conditions, coping strategies, self-care practices, and available resources to empower them in managing mental health.
- Collaboration with Multidisciplinary Team: Work closely with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care and ensure a holistic approach.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed and accurate documentation of assessments, care plans, treatments, and individual progress, adhering to confidentiality standards.
- Advocacy: Act as an advocate for each person’s mental health needs, ensuring their voices are heard and respected throughout the care process.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing with specialization in mental health or psychiatric nursing.
- Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) license.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in mental health or psychiatric care, preferably in a clinical or community-based setting.
- Skills and Attributes:
- Strong interpersonal and therapeutic communication skills
- Empathy, patience, and a deep understanding of mental health needs
- Ability to work effectively in high-stress situations
- Knowledge of de-escalation techniques and trauma-informed care
- Detail-oriented and organized, with strong clinical assessment skills
Requirements
- Certifications: CPR and First Aid certification; additional mental health or trauma certifications are an asset.
- Background Check: Successful completion of a background check, including vulnerable sector screening.
- Availability: Flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and on-call, as needed to support families and loved ones.
- Class 5 Drivers License
